So one of my local forums had some "experts" talking about jarring bettas. Though I disagree with the pet store cups, I have larger square jars in a warmer place and all my boys and girls seem quite happy. So I posted the link from the IBC website about "jarring" bettas and end of debate, yeah!!

I love the "expert" debates....  What they fail to realise is that their position is based on an unsubstantiated opinion, not  fact.  Warm, wet and clean; bettas really don't require much else....

I agree that the cups are on the extrem. I work for a pet store and no all to well that its waaaaaay toooo small for the little guys. Having switched to a new storethis week I was adding some of the male bettas to tanks with other fish and the guys there freaked out. "No you can"t keep bettas with other fish", they yelled. I laughed and asked, "why?" They said "they'll kill the other fish."

I was completely dumbfounded when i herd that. Especially from a guy that has been in the industry and hobby for like 20 years. Man oh man. I try and get all the bettas into larger tanks, bowls and containers asap at the stores. Unfortunately we need lots for selection for the customers which leaves us with leaving them in the cups. I try and educate all the staff at every store I've worked at or visited and tell them to do full W/C every day. I can only hope they will listento my advice though i doubt it.

As well i was passing through the pickering PJ's with my GF who is now running another store (she has a bitof the betta bug as well) and herd an employee telling a customer that if they wanted to have a male betta and a female together in a tank they would need a 10 gallon tank and put at least 3 females in it with him. Boy did that start and arguement. Then he got his manager to come talk to me and tell me i was wrong. What the employee didn't know is that i knew the manager from when i helped out at the old yorkdale location and told him what his employee was saying to customers he turned aound and asked him where he got that info from. It was really funny but a little sad to think that people may have followed his recommendations.

Unfortunately, it was a pet store employee who informed me back in my innocent years that males and females could be kept together... I learned the hard way - the fortunate part was that I had an empty 1 gallon bowl on hand that I was able to rescue her Undecided

Hagen - I bet the look on that poor employee's face was priceless! Cheesy

I worked at a pet store also, although not in the fish department. I have always figured that no advice is better than the wrong advice, so if I didn't know something FOR SURE, like out of my own experience, I didn't reccomend it. I was not afraid to say i didn't know, even though it ticked some customers off because most of the time they just want you to tell them what they want to hear.
